A lot of Walrus fans have been going down to Nicki’s Bella Marina in Bellingham on Friday nights to listen to Chuck Dingee and Joe Young play acoustic classic rock and pop tunes. Including me.
It was cool to see Jamie Shea at the club last Friday night. She hardly got inside the door when she was asked to join Joe and Chuck on the stage.
The three members of the Walrus played several songs before quitting around midnight.
I took this photo with my iPhone camera under red stage lights. (Originally uploaded by PhotoSynergy)

They say it’s your birthday! It’s my birthday, too, yeah!
Look for CaptKathy and all the Walruses at the Wild Buffalo tonight for the annual Walrus Virgo Birthday Party. The Walrus will be rockin’ the dance floor with classic rock ‘n’ roll and original tunes from Uncovered, the Walrus CD.
As a special treat, Creative Events’ Kristie Lundstrom has baked 120 chocolate espresso-bean cupcakes. Yum!

The New York Times had an article about walruses on May 20 that didn’t mention Bellingham’s classic rock band per se, but …
The article describes the walrus’ singing ability, saying that a walrus …
is an acoustic genius, its body an all-in-one band. Males woo females with lengthy compositions that have been compared in the complexity of their structure and phrasing to the songs of nightingales and humpback whales, but that use a greater number of body parts.
Walruses sing with their fleshy and muscular lips, tongues, muzzles and noses. They sing by striking their flippers against their chests to hit their pharyngeal pouches, balloon-like extensions of the trachea that are unique to Odobenus and that also serve as flotation devices.
In full breeding tilt, the bulls sound like a circus, a construction site, a Road Runner cartoon. They whistle, beep, rasp, strum, bark and knock. They make bell tones, jackhammer drills, train-track clatters and the rubber-band boing! of Wile E. Coyote getting bonked on the head. They mix and match their boings, bells and knocks, they speed up and slow down, they vocalize underwater, in the air, at the bubbly border between. They sing nonstop for days at a time, and their songs can be heard up to 10 miles away.
They listen to one another, take tips from one another and change their tune as time and taste require.

The Walrus has been slugging out a resplendent array of new covers for the group once again displaying the versatility of this group of veteran performers. The new tunes include songs by Sheryl Crow, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd and Crowded House to name a few. The return to Bellingham’s Fairhaven Pub on Friday May 2nd proves to be an event that shouldn’t be missed. As Michael Jackson once said, “I’ll be there.”

Jamie and Chuck have been working on the Walrus Web site and launched the newly re-designed pages last week.
TuskTusk.com now features new photos of the classic rock band and downloadable music files of the Walrus’ original music from the CD, “Uncovered.”
The photographer who took most of the photos is pretty awesome, too. (Jamie calls me “Annie”) :>)
